Windows vs. Mac: Why I Chose My Perfect PC

Choosing between a Windows PC and a Mac is a classic dilemma. It’s a decision that many of us grapple with when it’s time for a new laptop or desktop. For me, the answer has always been, and continues to be, Windows. But let’s be clear: both operating systems are incredibly capable. My choice wasn’t based on which is “better” in a universal sense but on which is a better fit for my specific needs and priorities.

Why Windows Won Me Over

So, why did I ultimately choose a Windows PC? Here’s a breakdown of the main reasons:

  • Price and Value: Let’s be honest, Macs generally come with a premium price tag. For the same amount of money, I can often get a Windows PC with significantly more powerful components (processor, RAM, graphics card, storage). This is especially important for me because…
  • Gaming Powerhouse: I’m a gamer. Need I say more? While gaming on Macs has improved, the reality is that the Windows ecosystem still reigns supreme. The vast majority of PC games are developed primarily for Windows. The hardware options available on Windows are also much wider, allowing you to build or buy a machine tailored specifically to gaming performance. Plus, Nvidia and AMD’s latest graphics cards are almost always optimized for Windows first. (image: Screenshot of popular PC game)
  • Hardware Customization: I love tinkering with hardware. With a Windows PC (especially a desktop), the possibilities for upgrading and customizing components are virtually endless. Want to add more RAM? Swap out the graphics card? Upgrade to a faster SSD? It’s all relatively easy and affordable on a Windows platform. While Macs offer some configuration options at the time of purchase, they are notoriously difficult and expensive to upgrade later.
  • Software Compatibility (and Choice!): While many popular creative apps are available on both platforms, Windows still holds the edge in terms of overall software compatibility. A diverse range of industry-specific software, legacy programs, and even some open-source tools are primarily designed for, or work better on Windows. The sheer volume of software available for Windows dwarfs the Mac App Store. (image: Screenshot of popular industry software)
  • Freedom from the “Apple Ecosystem”: Look, the Apple ecosystem is undeniably slick. But I don’t want to be locked in. I prefer the flexibility to choose my phone (Android), my smartwatch (Wear OS), and my other devices without feeling pressured to stay within a walled garden. Windows plays nicely with virtually everything.

It’s Not All Rainbows: Windows PC Considerations

It’s important to be balanced. Windows PCs aren’t perfect. Here are some of the downsides I’ve considered:

  • The Potential for Bloatware: Windows PCs can sometimes come pre-loaded with unwanted software (“bloatware”). However, a clean install of Windows can easily solve this problem.
  • Driver Management: Occasionally, driver issues can arise, requiring you to update or troubleshoot hardware drivers. It’s less of a problem than it used to be, but it’s still a potential consideration.
  • Security (Historically): The security stigma around Windows has all but disappeared. Windows is just secure, and many enterprise companies solely rely on this security.

So, Is a Windows PC Right For You?

Ultimately, the best choice depends on your individual needs and priorities. If you value:

  • Gaming Performance
  • Hardware Customization
  • Maximum Software Compatibility
  • Affordability
  • Wider Range of Hardware Options

Then a Windows PC is definitely worth serious consideration.
